"God reaches you through the heart. Demons reach you through the head."
So I've been told, and it's become a familiar story by now. One should ignore the mind and follow the heart. Something about this has always rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps this is a bit of defensiveness on my part, since I'm such a mental person. I'm also a very intuitive person, but that intuition has always worked in cooperation, not opposition, to my intellect. I see so much gullibility in the spiritual community. I see so many people willing to believe whatever they're told, so long the right person is telling it to them. Most of the time this is perfectly innocent, but I fear it can lead to more dire consequences. Certainly mystical truths cannot be realized at the rational level. But they need to be realized at the trans-rational level, not pre-rational. The difference between the two is that the trans-rational transcends AND includes the rational. That is, one must not abandon reason, but rather go beyond it. I recognize that relying on reason without following the heart can retard one's spiritual growth. However, I fear that doing the opposite can have far more dire consequences. Think Jonestown or Heaven's Gate.
The spiritual community certainly has reason to be suspicious of reason and logic. Afterall, it's so-called "rationalists" who condemn any belief in the divine or supernatural as superstitious nonsense. So there is great temptation to return the favor and condemn rationality as a mistake, or the temptations of the devil. But this is a spiritual mistake. Reason is God's gift to us. We must learn to master it before we can truly master the spiritual realms, which are transrational. Why would God want us to forsake such a talent? It has enabled the advancement of science and civilization. And by taking it with us to the transrational realms, we can become more complete human beings, closer to God and closer to our full potential.
